Her designs are drawn from the natural world, and are scratched into coloured clay with a mounted needle.
She makes platters, smaller vessels and jewellery pieces with the same technique.
Deb trades under the business name of Drawn and Fired, because she draws her designs into the clay, before firing it to create pottery.
Deb has always drawn and painted.
She has also worked in museums, and as a science teacher.
After a teaching career, she signed up for an Art Foundation Course at Chesterfield College, where she became interested in working in clay.
Midway through the course, she became enthusiastic about sgraffito drawing into clay.
She then decided to pursue creating ceramics as a business.
Her previous career in museums informs the work she creates, as she draws inspiration for her illustrations from the natural world including insects, anatomy, ethnographic and paleontological material.
